February 2005 ...

It´s time to action regarding working with the plants – that means if the work is not already started!
In fact, I think that the work and grow is started, at least concerning the fuchsia that has been winter stored in non-freezing greenhouses, basements, garrets or any place else except those fuchias that has been clamped down in the earth.
I have been told that some people already have digged up their fuchsias from the clamp, caused by the mild winter we have had in Denmark. That is okay if one has the space inside in hothouses e.c. for storing them for the rest of the winter. But normally the mild winters cheat us and suddenly the winter comes later and then the problem occurs. And that´s what the Weather Bureau just have inform that this winter will do. The temperatures will in the next week reach aproxx. Minus 15 degrees, and then it can be a problem to keep the plants safe, so hopefully there is still a big amount of fuchsias in their clamp yet.
Today it is snowy weather and the winter is back, but in my hothouse that does not matter, (but it will be cuttings dearly bought, because I must screw up the heaters in the hothouse :-(
The rest of the week the cuttings that has already left the “incubators”, must be covered with fibrecloth during the nights, in order to protect them. Although I have several heating possibility the temperature inside will decrease when the temperature outside will be so low. It´s no problem for the big plants which have an age on 1 year or older, but the cuttings will suddenly not enjoy a temperature jump on aproxx. 10 degrees.
At this time I have repotted 1600 baby cuttings from the incubator. In the incubator they are placed in plant trays with 106 in each tray, and when they are well rooted I repot them in 5.5 cm´s pots, and if you check out the Gallery page under the menu “Billeder fra drivhuset 2005” pictures of the cuttings are shown and you can see for yourself that the cuttings have a good time and that they grow as they are suppose to at this time at year.
As a matter of fact – things are going very well in the greenhouse. I fell that I am in control over the situation, and that I will be ready for the opening season at Marts. 24. But sometimes I can feel a little sweaty thinking of all the other stuff that must be done before that date. As some of you properly know, we had a storm (hurricane) in Denmark in January, and that storm destroyed a god deal of the last years working concerning fixing up the area around the nursery. Among other things my stock for pots, manure e.c. was blown to a hundred pieces, the windbreak made in wood was blown down, so a lot of work must now be done once more.
I will see the storm weather as an opportunity to do some of the reconstructions of the area that I have been dreamed about to be done at last.
This means that as soon as the wheater improves the weekends must be spend doing this reconstruction, and the cosy time working with the plants can then only be done as evening work.
Well, that was all for now. Please have a good time until I am back with further news from Denmark.
By the way, please check "The person behind", for seeing a picture of the lady behind this website and the owner of her own paradis ;-)
